Latest IWCMAI video - Wingchun Workshop May 2015

PUSHING

This is the sequel of the Power of Mind in the May 2015 Workshop of IWCMAI.

Is pushing really a pushing? Or is it not that simple? Or... it is that simple.

It was not the technique nor the power that we were mostly discussing during the workshop, but merely how the mind control the body to do certain type of action. And to prove how powerful the mind is when we can utilize it to the max.

Technique is Singular, but Concept is Universal. Once we can comprehend the various techniques in Wing Chun, then we come to the stage where we start to see the same concept underlying the different kinds of techniques.

Is the first push different than the second one? We'll let you to decide the answer.

The Basic Concept of the Creation of Wing Chun

This note below is excerpted from The Book of Wing Chun Vol. 1 by GM Chu Shong Tin.

According to the oral narrations by Grandmaster Ip Man, the course of Wing Chun creation by Wu (refer to Wu Mei or Ng Mui in Cantonese) is itself a unique and valuable reference for all of us in respect of deepening our understanding of Wing Chun. For this reason, I (refer to GM Chu Shong Tin) took a bold step and decided to document the narrations, so as to cherish the memory and admiration of Wu for learners from generations to generations.

Being a woman, Wu was physically not as strong as men. Hence to create a brand-new stream of martial arts, especially in her later years when her physical prowess was declining, its basic conception would definitely not have been founded on bodily strength, but on the desire to consume no power. Only with this strategy, a breakthrough in creation would have been possible.

MEMOIR

Passing of the Wing Chun Legend

(Sigung Chu Shong Tin, 1933 – 28 July 2014)

(Note: Photo properties of Nima King)

I recalled the first meeting with Sigung Chu Shong Tin in 1999 when I went to Hong Kong to avoid Indonesia’s presidential election.  I remember going to his apartment in Cheung Sha Wan and chatting with him (through my uncle as a translator) hoping to be able to train with him.  That time he was very welcoming and invited me to come to his class.  Unfortunately, destiny was not on my side as I needed to travel to Shanghai with my family, thus missed this great opportunity to train with him.  What I did manage to get was his DVD and a VTAA book containing list of students which has Sifu Kang Sin Sin name in it.

Years went by and I managed to come back to Hong Kong in 2004 for my migration process to Australia.  This time around, I made a point to ask again for training with Sigung Chu Shong Tin.  Unfortunately, he refused to train me without formal letter from Sifu Kang Sin Sin. Then just after Sifu passed away in 2010, I went back to Hong Kong and came together with Rio to his place to deliver this sad news to Sigung as well as asking him for training.  He finally agreed to my request and letting me attend his class supervised personally by him.

Valuable Learning Experience with Master Wan Kam Leung

written by Febry S.

The below article was written to share my experience learning from one of the great Wing Chun master in Hong Kong, Master Wan Kam Leung.

July 14th, I had a business assignment from my company which required me to travel to Hong Kong.  In my mind, I have always wanted to go to Hong Kong as the place is known as heaven to martial art lovers.  One of my intentions to go there is to meet and train with a Wing Chun master called Master Wan Kam Leung.  Life felt even more interesting as my friend Yance Paulana somehow booked me in a hotel close to Master Wan Kam Leung Wing Chun School without her even knowing it.  As an aside, I also went to Kowloon Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and met Taki Kimura there, but I will not expand further as this is a Wing Chun page, not Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu page.

Although Master Wan Kam Leung’s school was supposedly nearby from my hotel, but life was never easy.  I asked many people in Kowloon, but no one could tell me where the exact location of the school.  After searching for a while, I finally found the school, located not even 8 minutes by foot not far from my hotel!  Talking about perseverance!

As soon as I stepped on to the school, I was welcomed with a big smile from Pui Yee and of course the Master himself!  I was all excited when Pui Yee offered to help me arranging my private session with Master Wan Kam Leung.  It was quite strange as I know for a fact, I would get my ass kicked by the Master!

The Book of Wing Chun, by Si Gung Chu Shong Tin

We just got this book. Our Si Gung, Chu Shong Tin, wrote it.

Gonna read it thoroughly and probably Febry will review it (if he ever has the time) :D

Many useful knowledge is shared by Si Gung in this book. Just looking at several points last night, but already think that it's a very good, in fact, one of the best, Wing Chun Compendium around.

Anyone interested, should try to get hold of a copy (Original, of course!) by yourself.

Opening new IWCMAI shirt order session!

First of all, we'd like to apologize for not being able to share the IWCMAI shirts for free anymore as the cost to produce the shirts turned out to be quite high :D and the fact that the cost to produce the shirts has gone up tremendously (please blame the shirt printing maker :LOL)

Please decide the shirt size and color (White or Black).
Advice for the Shirt Size: After you measure your size, you may want to choose 1 size bigger than your size, as there's a possibility of the shirt to shrink after wash. We can't guarantee that the shirt won't shrink as we can't possibly know your own method of washing :D

Statement from IWCMAI

Our International Wing Chun Martial Art - Indonesia (IWCMAI) Wing Chun School was established by the late Grand Master Kang Sin Sin in Indonesia many years ago and recently there are some "Disloyal Pupils" who leverage the name and mastery of GM Kang Sin Sin to promote their Wing Chun School and Classes unethically.

In IWCMAI, the fighting methods and concepts that we're teaching are based on what we've learned from our Shifu Kang Sin Sin and Sigung Chu Shong Tin (Tsui Sheung Tin).

We're hereby giving the statement that all of the people in this school don't make a new school, and we're only continuing the legacy of our Shifu Kang Sin Sin and teaching the martial art on behalf of his Wing Chun School.

We repeat that we don't make any new school whatsoever.

And we welcome everybody that still considers oneself as our Shifu's student and is still loyal to him to join us at IWCMAI.

Power & Speed in Wing Chun (or Power vs. Speed ?)

Some people say that the Wing Chun's punch is not as powerful as other style's punches. And some people overcome this limitation by saying that although the Wing Chun's punch is not powerful, it has the benefit of speed. As a result, many people will say that a Wing Chun's practitioner doesn't need a strong punch, but just need a repetitive punch in a high velocity, and it will create the same damage as a strong punch will.

Is it true?

Simple Thoughts

Some simple thoughts about Wing Chun:

Wingchun is the science of fighting.
All the movements must be explainable scientifically. A punch utilizing a hardened muscle couldn't be done in a higher speed. If  a punch is done with a low/lower speed, then we have to ask the question "when will the punch hit the target?". Thus it's just only wasting the energy.
The closes distance of any 2 points is a straight line, not an arch nor anything else. Thus Wingchun is applying the concept of physics and mathematics in its fighting system.

Wingchun is the logic of fighting.
All the movements must be logical. If it doesn't make any sense, then we have to ask the question "why we use/practice this movement?"
